Standards-Based Grading (SBG)
Standards Based Grading measures a student's degree of mastery of a pre-determined set of learning goals or standards. For Social Studies, these standards will come from the Frederick County Essential Curriculum for Social Studies and the Common Core Literacy Standards for Social Studies. Students will receive grades in Home Access Center (HAC) based on their mastery of each standard that is covered in each unit. The grade will be based on the Social Studies mastery rubric that all Social Studies teachers at WKMS will use. Writing assignments will be graded using the FCPS Social Studies writing rubric.
HOME ACCESS CENTER (HAC) CATEGORY WEIGHTS:
Assessment of a student's level of mastery can take on a variety of forms: traditional tests and quizzes, writing assignments, projects and other performance based activities (where the student creates or does something else to show mastery). While students may work with others during learning activities, grades will be based solely on the individual student’s mastery of the standard (there will be no “group grades” given).
REASSESSMENT:
Students can reassess any standards covered through these deadlines:
Because reassessment is available to all students, NO extra credit is offered. Students’ grades will only reflect their individual mastery of standards.
HOMEWORK:
Social Studies homework will primarily consist of extended time for classwork assignments (as needed) as well as studying for summative assessments.

- SUMMATIVE: Social Studies Content Standards = 80%
- FORMATIVE: Skills Practice, Project Prep Assignments, etc. = 20%
